What Is the NRCHA World's Greatest Horseman?

The NRCHA World's Greatest Horseman (WGH) is the premier open competition of the National Reined Cow Horse Association — widely regarded as the most challenging and prestigious reined cow horse event in the world. Held annually at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo in Fort Worth, Texas, the competition draws the sport's elite riders and horses to compete across three demanding phases that test every dimension of stock horse athleticism and horsemanship.

First held in 1999, the World's Greatest Horseman crowns a single champion who has excelled in reining, cow work, and fence work — three disciplines that together define the complete stock horse. The event is not just a competition; it is a living tribute to the working cowboy tradition and the centuries-old partnership between rider and horse.

The WGH title is considered the highest honor in reined cow horse sport. Winning it once places a rider in the sport's elite. Winning it multiple times — as Corey Cushing, Russell Dilday, and a handful of others have done — cements a legacy that defines a generation of competition.

The Three Phases of Competition

What separates the World's Greatest Horseman from other reined cow horse events is its comprehensive format. Competitors must excel across all three phases, with cumulative scores determining the champion. No single specialist wins — only the most complete horseman.

Reining
Precision patterns demonstrating speed control, spins, sliding stops, and lead changes on a dry cow horse.
Cow Work
Horse and rider separate a single cow from the herd, then demonstrate control by holding it along the fence.
Fence Work
The horse tracks a cow at full speed along the arena fence, mirroring its every movement with athleticism and instinct.
Herd Work
Working from within the herd, the horse separates a cow and controls it using instinct and minimal rider cues.

The Venue: Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo

The World's Greatest Horseman is held each January and February during the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Fort Worth has been a center of western livestock culture for over a century, making it the ideal stage for what many consider the Super Bowl of reined cow horse sport.

The arena atmosphere — packed stands, elite competition horses, and the roar of cattle — creates an electric environment that tests not only the athletic ability of horse and rider but also their composure under pressure.

Multi-Time Champions

Only a handful of riders have won the World's Greatest Horseman title more than once. These multi-time champions represent the pinnacle of the sport:
