Biography
Back-to-back. Ron Ralls repeated his 2003 championship in 2004, this time aboard A Chic In Time — another Smart Chic Olena offspring, continuing the sire's dominance at the top of the WGH. Ralls joined Ted Robinson as the only riders to defend a WGH title in consecutive years, a distinction that speaks to the sustained quality of both his horsemanship and his horse development program.
A Chic In Time represented the depth of the Ralls program — capable of preparing two different horses from the same sire to championship level in consecutive years. Both of Ralls' WGH horses were Smart Chic Olena offspring, and their back-to-back victories helped establish their sire as the all-time leading sire in WGH history. That breeding legacy outlasted Ralls' own competitive career, with Smart Chic Olena progeny continuing to compete and win at the top of the sport for years afterward.
Ralls' consecutive titles remain one of the defining chapters of the WGH's early era. In a competition that demands peak performance from both horse and rider across four demanding events, repeating is extraordinarily difficult. That Ralls did it with different horses from the same sire — rather than simply returning the same horse — made the achievement all the more remarkable.
