John Swales claimed his second World's Greatest Horseman title in 2020 aboard Metallic Cat Rose, completing a return to the championship that confirmed everything his 2017 victory had suggested about the quality of his horsemanship program. His two titles, won three years apart with different horses from a rising bloodline, established him as one of the defining WGH competitors of the era.
Metallic Cat Rose carried the Metallic Cat bloodline that was becoming one of the most significant forces in reined cow horse and cutting horse competition. The horse's natural cow ability and athletic versatility made him a natural fit for the WGH's four-event format, and Swales' ability to develop that talent into championship-ready performance reflected the depth of his program. Swales proved that his 2017 championship was not built on a single exceptional horse but on a sustained approach to developing world-class reined cow horse competitors.
The 2020 WGH produced a Canadian champion for the second time in four years — and both of those Canadian titles belonged to Swales.
