John Swales brought international flair to the 2017 World's Greatest Horseman, becoming one of the first Canadian horsemen to claim the title. Riding Heza Diamond Spark — a stallion carrying Shining Spark bloodlines — Swales demonstrated that the world-class reined cow horse horsemanship the WGH demands could be developed north of the border as readily as anywhere in the American west. His victory expanded the geographic footprint of the WGH in a meaningful way.
Heza Diamond Spark proved himself across all four events of the championship, performing with the consistency and versatility that WGH competition requires. The Shining Spark bloodline — respected across multiple western disciplines for athleticism, trainability, and cow sense — showed well at the WGH level through this partnership. Swales' ability to develop and present a horse of that quality reflected the depth of his program and his understanding of what the WGH demands at its highest level.
Swales would return in 2020 to claim a second WGH title, making him one of the event's multi-time champions and confirming that his 2017 victory was the product of a sustained horsemanship program rather than a single exceptional horse.
