Biography
Jon Roeser claimed the 2002 World's Greatest Horseman title in Reno, Nevada, aboard Smart Little Rooster — a championship that came during the event's transitional era, before the competition found its permanent home at the Fort Worth Stock Show. The 2002 running marked the fourth year of the event, and Roeser's victory positioned him as one of the WGH's early defining competitors.
Smart Little Rooster demonstrated the versatility that the WGH demands — a horse that could execute the precision of rein work, the instinct of herd work, the power of steer stopping, and the athleticism of cow work, all in a single bridle. Roeser's ability to prepare and present a horse of that capability reflected the depth of his horsemanship program in Lemoore, California.
Roeser would return three years later to claim a second WGH title in 2005, making him one of the event's multi-time champions. His two championships — one in Reno, one in Stephenville — span the geographic journey the event made before settling permanently in Fort Worth, making Roeser one of the few riders whose WGH legacy touches multiple chapters of the competition's history.
