Reined Cow Horse

Born on the working ranch. Perfected in the arena.

What Is Reined Cow Horse?

Reined cow horse combines prescribed rein work with the ability to control cattle. Its traditions trace to the trained ranch horse and the vaquero system of developing a horse through snaffle bit, hackamore, two-rein and bridle work.

Formats Differ by Class

NRCHA classes vary in equipment, horse age and cattle-work requirements. Some involve rein work and cow work; major aged events also include herd work. Boxing classes offer a different cattle-work format. Always check the rules for the specific class.

The World’s Greatest Horseman Adds a Fourth Test

Herd work
Separate a cow from the herd and demonstrate the horse’s ability to control it.
Rein work
Perform a prescribed pattern with circles, spins, lead changes and stops.
Steer stopping
Rope and stop a steer, demonstrating timing and control.
Cow work
Box a single cow, turn it along the fence and circle it under control. Fence work is part of this event, not a separate fifth phase.

The WGH requires one horse and rider to complete all four events in the same bridle. Herd work and cow work are distinct scores; fence work is part of cow work.
