Cow Work in Reined Cow Horse
Where instinct meets athleticism — working cattle at the highest level.
Cow Work and Herd Work Are Different Events
In the World’s Greatest Horseman, cow work is the single-cow event: the horse and rider demonstrate control through boxing, fence turns and circling. Herd work is scored separately and begins with cattle in a herd.
What Happens in Cow Work?
Horse and rider establish control of a cow at the end of the arena, take it down the fence, turn it in each direction and complete the circling work required by the pattern and rules. Judges evaluate control, position, degree of difficulty and the quality of execution.
The Four-Event Test
A World’s Greatest Horseman contender must also complete herd work, rein work and steer stopping with the same horse. Success in cow work contributes to the four-event composite that determines the title.
